The company will comply with the requirements of all relevant legislation setting health and safety standards in the workplace and dealing with the protection of the public. To this end each Group Company shall maintain appropriate safeguards with respect to:
- Plant and equipment
- Systems and methods of work
- Training and instruction of colleagues
- Supervision of work
- Places of work, means of access and egress
- The working environment; and,
- The transport of personnel, materials and equipment
- Fire precautions
This will be achieved by effective management systems involving risk assessment and the application of control measures which adequately limit or eliminate foreseeable risks.
Safety in the workplace will be monitored by means of audits which ensure acceptable standards and that arrangements for the maintenance of such standards are satisfactory.
- a) All accidents, dangerous occurrences or other circumstances suggesting unacceptable risk will be subject to investigation, reporting and appropriate action.
- b) Where any additional risk or disadvantage occurs through any form of disability to a colleague then consideration will be given to the amendment of any practises, policies and procedures or to provide auxiliary aids to minimise that risk.
Relevant data will be collected, collated, analysed and monitored by Heads of Departments and the Health & Safety Committee both to ensure that performance trends remain acceptable and to focus future health and safety initiatives.
The Company will undertake and encourage positive consultation with colleagues and their recognised representatives in promoting maintaining and monitoring the effectiveness of each Company’s Health & Safety Policy.
The Company aims to maintain safe and healthy working conditions and promote a culture of continuous improvement in our health and safety system and performance. This includes the right of any member of staff to refuse to work if they feel the activity or site is unsafe on the grounds of health and safety without fear of disciplinary action.
Responsibilities
In support of this policy, the Group SHEQT Manager, with specific responsibility for Safety, will chair the Group Health and Safety Committee and will ensure that the Company prepares a written statement outlining arrangements for the effective planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of the preventative and protective measures relevant to the business concerned.
The CEO & COO shall hold overall responsibility for the adequacy of the Group’s Health & Safety Policy and its application and this will be both monitored and reported upon through the Group Health and Safety Committee. Each named Director shall then be accountable for the implementation of the Policy within his sphere of business activity; for identifying any weakness in it; and instigating remedial measures when necessary.
Each department within the company will be required to prepare and implement an Annual Safety Plan. Annual plans will focus on identified key areas, have specific targets, define persons responsible and provide a link to budgets and resources.
Each individual with supervisory or management responsibility shall effectively monitor all aspects of Health and Safety associated with the work under their control.
Directors, Managers and Supervisors will be supported by the provision of specialist advice and guidance from a number of internal and external sources including Company Safety Personnel and a Medical adviser.
The Company expects unqualified support from colleagues in its continuing effort to improve standards of health and safety; and considers safe working to be a condition of employment in this respect.
Involvement of Colleagues
The Company welcomes the involvement and commitment of colleagues. This will be achieved through direct communication with the Managers reinforced through formal consultation in Health & Safety Committees.
The role ‘Representatives of Colleague Safety’ can play in helping improve health and safety standards are acknowledged. This contribution is welcomed.
The Company is committed to supporting arrangements for the appointment and training of Safety Representatives and the fulfilment of their role.
