Pacifica, one of the UK’s largest providers of outsourced support services in the electrical appliance warranty market, has been recognised for its commitment to sustainability by winning a prestigious award at the Sunderland Business Excellence Awards.

The Houghton-le-Spring-based company scooped the Sustainable Initiative of the Year title, which was presented at a gala event held at Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light.

The award, sponsored by Sunderland City Council, celebrates companies from Sunderland and County Durham that have made sustainability and the environment, integral parts of their business operations and strategies.

Providing maintenance and repair of electrical goods on behalf of Original Equipment Manufacturers, retailers, and warranty providers, Pacifica undertakes more than 350,000 appliance repairs every year.

Pacifica aims to change the throwaway culture that pervades the UK today, by trying to persuade people to repair domestic white goods, rather than replace them.

To ensure the company can keep households running by providing repairs to their domestic appliances while also protecting the environment, the business has undertaken a programme of activity through its Environmental Social Governance (ESG) Strategy to meet both objectives.

This includes achieving a number of climate goals and targets including becoming a carbon neutral business by the end of 2022, which it achieved four months ahead of schedule. It aims to be a zero-carbon business by 2035.

In addition, Pacifica is working to ensure it sends zero waste to landfill from its warehousing activities by the end of 2023 and reduce waste to landfill from its field activities to less than 5 percent by the end of this year before eradicating it completely.

Kevin Brown, CEO of Pacifica, said: “As a ‘business for good’, we are exceptionally proud to have won this award, which recognises both our strategy to become a zero-carbon business and help reduce waste by keeping the country’s domestic appliances running for longer.

“We have made sustainability and reducing our impact on the environment a core element of our business and our ESG strategy, with tremendous support from colleagues and customers as we develop new technology-led solutions and working practices that are helping us meet our green targets.”
